The answer to the above question is obvious: nothing. But alas, diapers do not fit in a fanny pack, so a backpack’s the next best thing when you’re flying.
The important crap I DO carry in my backpack:
1) Diapers, wipes, and an extra outfit. Duh. I usually pack 8 diapers, in case of delays.
2) Small snacks. Raisins, Cheerios, Goldfish. It also takes my guy FOREVER to eat the pretzels they pass out on the plane. Score!
3) Books. I’ve been known to make fun of Dr. Seuss, but I must apologize, because his books have saved my tush several times. They don’t take up much room, and they have a lot of text and interesting pictures to ponder.
4) Family flashcards/holiday cards. My cousin, whom I copy on almost every aspect of parenting, gave me the idea for flashcards. (Take a photo of Grandma and sloppily paste it to a piece of cardboard. Repeat for every family member and you have a set of flashcards.) I then take a picture of these pictures so they’d be on my phone to cycle through on the flight. Lil’ man LOVED Xmas cards this year, so we bring those, too. Merry Spring Break, everyone!

Yes, but in what do you carry your passport?
A stylish, secretive passport fanny pack, of course!
My cousin has a special box of little toys that only come out on trips. Her kids get really excited to see their “airplane toys” and stay entertained much longer with them. Great travel tips Erin!
Thanks for commenting Allison! That’s a great suggestion. It’s hard to choose toys that will keep attention but aren’t too noisy! I do that with books; set certain ones aside that he really likes (that are somewhat long).

Flash cards for learning family members? What a great idea! That would have helped me immensely when I was a kid. I have a massive extended family that I would only see 1-2x a year. Every time we visited, certain relatives would ask “Do you remember me???” And I remember always being really shy and embarrassed because I didn’t.
I agree; my brother and I have 26 first cousins. The flashcards really help lil’ man, and he never wants to put them away!
P.S. I am totally stealing this idea for my future (waaaay in the future) child(ren).
Ha, of course!
