Here’s a typical flying-solo-with-a-kid outfit from toes to nose:
1) Boots in winter and sandals in summer. Both slip on/off quickly, making security easy breasy.
2) Yoga pants. How else am I going to pee in that 2×2 bathroom while holding my 25 lb bundle of joy? Wear pants that require no zipper, that’s how.
3) Long/short sleeve shirt + awesome mom vest with POCKETS. At the airport, pockets are crucial for easy access to ID, boarding pass, phone. If you’re wondering why I don’t just wear jeans with pockets instead of a mom vest, please refer to #2, or be my BFF and tell me where to buy yoga pants with pockets.
4) Tissues. I said this list was from toes to nose, so there you go. Keep your awesome mom vest stuffed with them for spills, playing peek-a-boo, and occassionally, even snot.

Wow, that is hot mom! (I’m married to her, I can say that). I must say I heard gobs of horror stories about how bad flying with a kid can be, and really the downside for me is I can’t take a nap! Of course, I’ve seen some of the struggles that parents have with older kids that can be more defiant, and I am crossing my fingers that there isn’t far worse to come.
Thanks! It was a sad to say sayonara to just “plane” sleeping through a flight (I heart puns.) However, now that lil’ man is on one nap a day, I plan our flight super early so we can get to our destination and BOTH take an afternoon snooze!
Kudos to you for this post. Couldn’t agree more. As the mom of another frequent flyer baby, I also don the yoga pants (aka sweatpants of the modern yuppy mom) when flying. I wear a bulky sweater that doubles as a pillow when rolled up. When baby K was younger I’d wear a polka dot shirt because polka dots keep little ones entertained for an impressively long time.
Amanda, thanks for your comments. I never thought of polka dots…brilliant!
